Designer Gwenael Nicolas just put together a piece of furniture art that’s as delighted to receive your courteous rump as your courteous rump is to find its place on a bench. The Mist Bench is wrought from coarse knits of optical fiber that are sensitive to human movement. As people approach the bench, the fibers glow. The closer the people get, the more intensely the bench casts its luminescence.
It’s hard for us to speculate on the importance of interfurnitural relationships. We’ve had relationships with several chairs in the past, and each one was comfortable in its own right. However, we don’t think any individual chair was suitable as a life partner for us. We’re more fickle than that, you see. Perhaps we just haven’t fully considered what it feels like to be a chair.
The Mist Bench is scheduled to debut in Milan for “Design Week,” so you might just get yourself over to Italy if you fancy an interaction with a piece of interior decoration.
